Edinburgh's Innovative Approach to La Boheme
Edinburgh's Usher Hall, renowned for its exceptional acoustics, has transformed into a makeshift opera house for the production of La Boheme. This adaptation involved removing the first four rows of seats to accommodate the orchestra, allowing ample space for the cast to perform with minimal props and beautifully painted backdrops of Paris. The venue has a history of hosting concert performances, particularly during the Festival, and this innovative setup enhances the theatrical experience.
While the Edinburgh Festival has faced challenges in presenting high-quality opera, there is hope for revitalization under the direction of Fergus Linehan. His vision includes commissioning new productions from Scottish Opera, which has demonstrated proficiency in semi-staged performances of lesser-known operas. This approach could not only elevate the festival's reputation but also provide a cost-effective solution for future productions. The potential for Scottish Opera to tour these performances across Scotland further enriches the cultural landscape.
La Boheme New Haven reviews
Van The Man - In Exceptional Form
"I had last seen La Boheme in 1985, and it was a great show. This was an exceptional concert. He has incredible saxophone chops, and many of the intros to the songs had a 50's-60's two-horn "front line" lead in, i.e., they swung! La Boheme sounded great and had a lot of energy. I feel very lucky to have caught a musical giant with an exceptional voice at the peak of his late career. It is clear that La Boheme is at ease and loose, and his performances benefit from that. Since then, I have heard that his performances were inconsistent. The song selection spanned his career. I heard that his tours in the last few years had shows that were excellent."
